Improved Personal Protection From Dyneema®, The Netherlands
In the ongoing effort to provide better materials for improved personal protection, DSM Dyneema offers an expanded range of grades of Dyneema UniDirectional (UD) material. These are built with Dyneema, the world’s strongest fiber™ (an UHMWPE (Ultra High Molecular Weight PolyEthylene) fiber). DyneemaUD is a highly versatile material for use by armor designers and decision makers, looking to provide strong but lightweight protection.
Inserts.
Inserts made with Dyneema enable stopping heavier and more penetrating rifle threats, such as 7.62 x 39 mm (AK47 MSC) or 7.62 x 51 mm Nato Ball. These lightweight, stand-alone inserts enable opportunities to add protection in other critical body areas – without exceeding total weight – by using front, back or side plates. Dyneema UD provides excellent multi-hit and angle-shot performance, as well as edge-shot performance, which enables a larger area of coverage. Back face deformation (BFD) or trauma values are also outstanding. To stop armor piercing (AP) rounds, Dyneema can be used in combination with ceramic strike faces. The strike face helps to break up the hard ammunition core, and the backing made with Dyneema catches the resulting fragments.
In addition, Dyneema UD is highly durable and resistant to water, UV rays and chemicals. Both military and law enforcement agencies all over the world have stated their confidence in inserts made with Dyneema. Inserts can be combined with vests made with Dyneema to enable a wider range of protection.

Vests.
Vests made with Dyneema enable protection against threats such as handgun ammunition, fragments and knives. Thanks to the material’s unique, patented construction (UniDirectional material), vests made with Dyneema provide an ultra high stopping power. Dyneema UD also enables properties which are mentioned in the NIJ 0101.06 standard: excellent multi-hit performance and the capability to stop angle and edge shots (providing ultimate area for protection). Dyneema UD provides maximum strength for minimum weight. This, combined with low back face deformation (BFD) or trauma and abrasion resistance, enables reliable protection and wearing comfort in a vest.
In addition, Dyneema has high durability (environmental conditioning NIJ 0101.06) and also resistance to fire, moisture, UV rays and chemicals. Vests even can be designed to be floatable, due to the light weight and water resistance of the material. To protect against heavier rifle fire, vests can also be easily upgraded using class-leading inserts made with Dyneema.

Helmets.
Helmets made with Dyneema enable extremely lightweight helmets compared to the conventionally available ballistic helmets. Reduced weight enables the addition of communication and night-vision equipment, not to mention supporting improved comfort and agility. The excellent protection against fragments and the ability to stop even rifle threats enable forces to perform their duties with a higher degree of protection. Helmets made with Dyneema can provide excellent multi-hit performance and back face deformation (BFD) or trauma values. Also DSM Dyneema provides solutions for paintability.
In addition, Dyneema UD is extremely durable and resistant to water, UV rays and chemicals. DSM Dyneema has given its full commitment to the helmet market. We actively work on future helmet developments and improvements on secondary properties. In short, Dyneema means protection, comfort and value. That’s why military and special forces around the world increasingly choose helmets made with Dyneema when it comes to their protection.
