PSS – Patrol Support System by Elsag Datamat, Italy
Device specifically designed by Elsag Datamat to perform identity verification, a broad range of territory control operations and other functions needed for military, civilian and law enforcement applications, all contained in a hand-held device.
PSS is a hand-held device based on Windows CE 5.0 in a shock-resistant, water-proof, protective shell, integrated with a biometric fingerprint scanner, a smart card reader, a crypto SIM socket, a micro-camera, a GPS location finder, a GSM/GPRS module, for voice and data connection and a removable SD flash disk of 2GB.
The smart card reader provides operator identification by comparing a live scan with the fingerprint previously stored on a microchip card. The same function can be used to identify C.I.E./C.N.S./P.S.E. (Electronic Identity Card/National Services Card/Electronic Residency Permit) holders without having to connect to a data bank (1:1 verification).
With the PSS, an individual’s identity can be verified easily, quickly and securely by scanning their fingerprints and matching them against the Central AFIS database (1:N verification). The built-in camera can be used to acquire still and video images, with the support of independently activated IR and white light illuminators for use in bad light or darkness. This makes it possible to verify individuals and/or important details, like vehicle license plate numbers, against local or remote databases.
The GPS location finder with built-in antenna displays the unit’s geographical position for use with map software, while the GSM/GPRS module allows operators to place voice calls via ear-sets and transmit data at high speed to command headquarters.
The system software and easy to use graphical interface, featuring simplified menus and large virtual buttons, allow the operator to select the functions required using nothing more than a finger. An additional memory card can be plugged into the device to expand the system’s internal memory.
Typical Applications • Biometric identity verification • Satellite navigation • Recognition of vehicle plate numbers • Data connections to remote hosts • Electronic document verification • Digital signature on acquired data
